Drive to Thrive is an experiential team building activity from STEMulus Consulting in which small teams use cardboard and everyday stationery to build road sections filled with creative obstacles, each one representing a real personal or professional challenge.

The teams then connect their sections into one continuous pathway and drive a toy car through it.

How the Activity Works

1. Plan Your Road

Participants split into small teams and design a road section together. Each team decides what its road looks like and which obstacles it will include. Every obstacle stands for a real challenge, such as tight deadlines, shifting priorities, communication gaps, or change. This stage builds shared vision, creative thinking, and early alignment.

2. Build with Cardboard and Stationery

Using cardboard and simple stationery items, teams turn their plans into physical road sections. Limited materials mean they have to be resourceful, divide tasks, and make sure the road holds up. This stage builds delegation, ownership, and communication under constraints.

3. Connect the Roads

Once the sections are complete, the teams join them into one continuous pathway. Sections built independently rarely fit perfectly, so teams must adapt, negotiate, and compromise to make the connections work. This mirrors the real-world challenge of aligning separate teams and functions around a common goal.

4. Drive the Toy Car Through

The whole group watches a toy car travel the finished pathway, past every obstacle the teams created. It’s a joyful, tangible payoff that shows what the group achieved together.

A facilitated debrief then connects the obstacles, the build, and the connection stage to everyday workplace behaviors, so the learning carries back to the job.
